Samuel de Champlain:
Samuel de Champlain was a great explorer. He sailed for the country of France beginning in the year 1603. He continued to sail for six years. Although he sailed for France, it is interesting that Samuel de Champlain was born in Brovage, Norway, in 1567. When Samuel was young, he would go along with his father and uncle on their voyages at sea. He studied cartography, navigation, astronomy, and mathematics under their watchful eye.
In the year 1608, this explorer made a goal to establish a fur trading post in Canada. He set sail from France, west across the Atlantic Ocean, and continued southwest through the St. Lawrence river. Along the St. Lawrence river, he discovered a lake, which he named Lake Champlain. Shortly after, Samuel reached his destination in what is now Quebec, for his trading post. This became the first permanent settlement in New France. Over the winter, Samuel de Champlain led 32 colonists to settle into Quebec. However, only nine survived this first winter. This voyage had several hardships. One major hardship was the Iriquois tribe, which held a grudge against Samuel de Champlain for helping the Huron tribe win a war against the Iriquois. Although Champlain faced several hardships, he still completed his goal. He also became known as the Father of New France.
